Q&A: What would be the best student laptop?

Question by iJiggsy: What would be the best student laptop?
More specifically, if you were a student, or have been a student, at whatever school for whatever purpose, what type of laptop would be generally the best. Even just the brand would help. If you say an Apple, just verify whether the lone software would be worth learning (basically it has to be way better). Price is another issue. Any laptop under $ 1,200. Possibly a Windows Vista model.

What laptop do you recommend for a new college student?

Question by suspended_acctx3: What laptop do you recommend for a new college student?
I am going to college this fall (leaving in 1 week!) and I will be buying a new laptop for college. What laptop is best? I am particularly looking for one with a lot of memory, good wireless internet and (hopefully) less than $ 1,000.
The $ 1,000 price range is flexible but not by much.
Any help/comparisons between laptops you can recommend will be helpful.

It depends. Are you more partial to certain brands? When buying a laptop, remember that it only comes with trial software. Things like anti-spyware and anti-virus software, as well as Microsoft Office will have to be bought separately. Make sure you factor that into your overall budget.

The majority of laptops come with wireless cards already integrated, so that takes care of one part. High memory for a laptop is between 3-4 gbs of DD2 memory. 3 should be sufficient for a college student, unless you tend to use a lot of memory.

The next factor is size. Are you looking for something very portable? If so, you should consider something with a screen about 14.1″-15.4″. There are 12″ ones, but those are almost too small.

Next, consider whether AMD v. Intel is important to you. Intel processors tend to be more energy efficient, meaning they don’t get quite so hot, while AMD is cheaper.

Not only that, but only 2 brands come with restore disks: Dell and Toshiba. Any other brand you would have to either have the disks made for you, make them yourself, or buy them (Restore disks allow you to put your computer back to factory settings in case you need to reboot/reset). It takes about 3 hours on average to make a set of restore disks, sometimes more.

Using those things will help you narrow down your selection significantly. Your best bet is to look at laptops on BestBuy.com and use the left hand menu to narrow down the selection. You can choose brand, size, memory, hard drive size, processor brand, etc that way. I personally recommend buying an HP, along with services like Optimization/Restore Disk Creation from Geek Squad.

Good Luck =)

go to http://dell.com do not get anything else, yes they may be a little more expensive than other brands but they are very reliable, they have a good support staff (you can actually understand them unlike other brands.) i would go for one that has windows professional, make sure that it has; microsoft word, powerpoint, etc (it should be microsoft works or something) make sure to get a power cable, and extra batteries are always handy. windows media center is always good too, for when you want to relax with your favorite movies or music. make sure you will have usb ports- i think all models do, but just as a precaution make sure. i would call dell, as they can always make better deals, and give discounts that you normally wouldnt get over the internet. hope that helps.

edit
to the person who says to get something from a store i have this to say,
1. they will overcharge you for the simplest things
2. they aren’t trained as much as dell operators.
3. stores close, ex. best buy opens at 10 am and closes at 10 pm on weekdays, and 10 to 6 on sundays. whereas dell support is 24/7 for any problems.

edit
and dell doesnt charge you $ 60 an hour like the geek squad at best buy

Im at University and my laptop has died. It was really old too.

Is there anywhere in England that offers student discount on laptops. I would prefer it if it was a shop I could walk into rather than the internet so I can really see what Im buying.

Get a MacBook. Go to your local Apple store to test the Macs out and see how you like them. They may not be the cheapest laptops around but they are amazing. MacBooks include everything you mentioned on your list and a lot more. MacBooks are perfect for college and will make your college experience, much more relaxed. Good luck.
