I Want My Retina-Display MacBook Pro

Is it possible to upgrade my laptop CPU from a dual core to a core 2 duo?

Question by Aaron: Is it possible to upgrade my laptop CPU from a dual core to a core 2 duo?
I just bought an ACER dual core laptop….its nice, but I was wondering if I could eventually upgrade it to a faster core 2 due….is this possible? Does Dual Core and Core 2 Duo share the same socket?

Best answer:

Answer by Mercuri
Most laptop CPUs cannot be upgraded and often the CPU is soldered (ie permamently attached) to the motherboard. Even assuming it wasn’t there would be all kinds of other things to consider, such as heat distribution, compatibility, etc. If you want a faster CPU in your laptop, return the laptop and get another, one with a faster CPU.

Q&A: How do the i7 cores (laptop versions) compete with the Intel Core 2 Extremes?

Question by Jinxess: How do the i7 cores (laptop versions) compete with the Intel Core 2 Extremes?
Is there ANY place at all the Intel Core 2 Extremes shine much brighter compared to the i7 cores, the laptop versions, even with turbo boost? Maybe multi-threading and CPU-reliant programs? Any area at all or is the i7 really a complete and whole upgrade?

Answer by bon-gart
Yes. The core i7 processors are better processors all around, because they are the replacements that Intel has designed.

Is it nice that the Core 2 extreme processors run at their speed all the time? Not really, when you think about it. You will get the speed you need, when you need it with the Core i7, but you won’t get the heat generation when you DON’T need it, while the Core 2 extreme processors will be throwing out more heat when it is not necessary, because they will be running far too hot when there is no demand for the speed.

Also, the core i7 processors have included hyperthreading on each core. So, a quad core i7 has 8 processing threads, where the Core 2 extreme processors only have 4. Just as the older Pentium 4 chips with hyperthreading acted like a dual core processor.

The Core 2 extreme processors only shine in desktop systems where you are able to overclock and overcool the system, to get increased performance in exchange for some serious money spent on keeping the chip cool. Then, and only then, can you make the Core 2 Extreme quad core run faster… however, you sacrifice stability to a HUGE degree… hard core gamers with overclocked systems know all the time they risk having a game crash in the middle of intense activity.

So just like the Core 2 extreme is an improvement over a core 2 duo… which is an improvement over pentium 4… the core i7 is an improvement over the Core 2 series.

end of line

What is the real life battery time difference between Nehalem and Sandy Bridge core i3 laptops?

Question by : What is the real life battery time difference between Nehalem and Sandy Bridge core i3 laptops?
what would be the battery time difference between the laptops carrying Nehalem and Sandy Bridge Core i3 Processors?

Best answer:

Answer by Ben
That would depend on how you’re using them and which processors you’re looking at. The Core i3-330UM and Core i3-380UM are both Ultra-Low Voltage processors, which operate at half the power (18W vs 35W) of the normal processors. So those will get much better battery life than the Sandy Bridge Core i3 processors (of which there is currently only one- the Core i3-2310M). On the other hand, if you’re maxing out the processors, they’ll all get the same battery life since they have the same power cap. The Sandy Bridge processor will just be about 15% faster. I suppose you could get a bit more battery life in the normal case, where the processor isn’t using it’s full capacity. I’m not sure it would be much because a good chunk of the power is for the screen and the graphics card, not the processor.

Q&A: Is this a good quad core laptop processor?

Question by : Is this a good quad core laptop processor?
I am very interested in a laptop (HP dv6z), but I am afraid that the processor is too weak. They processor is an AMD Quad-Core A8-3530MX (2.6GHz/1.9GHz). I am a casual gamer and I will start programing soon.

Best answer:

Answer by Ryan
In my opinion the quad-core AMD CPUs are quite fantastic, and gaming performance will depend more on the dedicated (or “discrete”) graphics card in the machine. That CPU should compile code fairly quickly. I use a source-based Linux distribution on a machine with a much weaker CPU and it takes a reasonable amount of time to compile large projects. Some compilers are not optimized for multiple CPU cores though, so you would get better performance on a faster single core or dual core CPU than four cores running at a lower clock speed. I would not worry about this though because the performance you gain in every other aspect will make up for it.
