You will definitely need something with a bit of "kick" to it. If it were me I would be looking for something that at least 2Gb's of ram (preferably expandable to more), the biggest fastest hard drive I could find, something like a 100+ Gb 7200rpm SATA. A DVD-RW+- is a no brainer. I would MAKE SURE your video card does not share RAM, but has at least 128-256mb of it's own video ram. and you will need firewire. Then from there pick the fastest processor your budget will allow. I'm partial to AMD's but a mid-high range core duo should do you fine.
Other things to consider are things like battery life (the more cells the better), how heavy it is , built in wifi /bluetooth is pretty standard now but you'll want that, and if you can spring for it I would even consider something that has a built in webcam and TV tuner.

Well this is kind of a loaded question...the best...go to Alienware/falcon Northwest or one of those guys that will supply you with one for a rather large sum...if you are looking for an update for the Vaio, just get a newer one...most laptops can be supplied with a DVD burner from the company that makes it, and most any reputable company will be fine.

Think about upgrading the one you have, more RAM, better graphics card, DVD burner and bigger(bigger the better, movies take a lot of space) hard drive , would work out cheaper and can be done quite easily.

Comment on What is the best time of the year to buy a Dell laptop computer on sale? by Kaye

If your seriously thinking about buying a Dell I would think twice. I tried to work on my daughters brand new $ 2500+ computer and it was awful. To even print something was a major ordeal because, it won't let you save a quick print setting to use less ink. Apparently, they want you to use the darkess setting so that you'll have to buy more ink catridges that they market each and every time you try to print. When you attempt to change the settings it takes forever to load. That not only annoying it makes me mad that they think we're so stupid!
I hate that computer compared to my HP. I don't care if they gave me their top of the line for free, I'd stick with my HP! :) :)

Also, anybody (I mean anybody) can easily and quickly buy the ink to refill their own catridges. If you take your time the first or 2nd. time and read the instructions for the cartridge your filling it's quick, simple and real cheap! The only thing you need to be careful about is to make sure you fill them in an area that can be easily cleaned up (won't stain anything) in the event you spill some ink. Try it you'll see for yourself.

Scare tactics they all use:
They'll try to tell you if your cartridge isn't filled right it'll leak and ruin your printer or that you won't get the quality of print like you would with a new catridge. This is all a bunch of bull! Again, an insult to our intelligence! If you can read, you can refill their cartridges - blindfolded after some practice. They're ripping everyone off!!

Good Luck!

I have three Hp printers and have spilled ink, had an ink cartridge leak and they're all 3 have never had a problem.

With what you need to do definately go for an Apple MacBook but get the one with DVD burner. It is what i have and they are brilliant with a fantastic screen. They may be a little more expensie but they are worth every cent. Go try one at an Apple seller.

Well, not likely under those circumstances, but, check for the Tax Free Holiday in your state, if they have one, or, keep an eye out for rebates, and instant savings.

Hello:

Both DELL and Gateway have some pretty nice ones. You may end up needing a better model than the lower-end models, but both have good mid-priced models in the $ 700 to $ 800 US price range.

Cheers!
