The best laptop I think there is Gateway.
I have one and its very nice and reliable. Everything you mentioned a Gateway can do.
Their the best bang for your buck.

Well, depending on your definition of "cheap". If $ 500 is in your price range, there is a Gateway Nv5207 at bestbuy. This is the laptop I have, its very good. If you're looking for a cheaper laptop, there is a Compaq Presario for about $ 300 (also at bestbuy). Decent specs for what your trying to use it for. If you don't like the choices, then go to the website, i'm sure there will be AT LEAST one you'll like. :)

Toshiba Satellite are very reliable and will serve you well.
I run seven and own three others which are all Toshiba and are all running very well
Now that Vista is not so buggy it is OK W7 is fine but there are still one or two issues with the 64bit and peripheral equipment if it is of an older type.
I have two W7 systems four Vista and one XP
One of my own laptops has dual boot with Vista and W7(64bit) this is the one I am using now on Vista. they are all no larger than 15" screens for better transportability

Here’s a good one on sale at Briggs & Riley, you can find it in their outlet center- ( http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=15-point-4-inch-SpeedThru-Computer-Sleeve_BB902 ). It’s lightweight, durable and it’s also checkpoint friendly. This means when you travel you don’t need to take the laptop out of its sleeve at security screenings. The interior is lined with fleece for laptop protection. It’s also got a nice webbing handle. Check it out!

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i3-2310M-Notebook-Processor.45318.0.html
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-2000-100.37994.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-A-Series-A6-3400M-Notebook-Processor.55753.0.html
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6520G.55734.0.html

CPU speed ranking:
- i5-480M (1st Gen)
- i3-2310M (2nd Gen)
- A6-3400M

Graphic card speed ranking:
- A6-3400M
- i3-2310M (2nd Gen)
- i5-480M (1st Gen)

So the i3 seems to be the best compromise at the moment
especially if you keep in mind that the 4 cores of the AMD are not
much utilized by current main stream software, which you will use daily

Lenovo is a well known brand so the built quality should be ok too
Although in this low prize segment every manufacturer has to cut costs
which results in compromises...

You should also look at the display resolution and the external interfaces
RAM: best 4GB or 8GB 1333 MHz for dual channel
